How to get your Old Mutual retirement annuity tax certificate

Old Mutual makes tax certificates available on its website, in the Old Mutual App and on WhatsApp. Which one you use depends on the Old Mutual business that administers your retirement annuity.

Prepare retirement annuity certificates for eFiling. TaxScanZA scans and exports SARS-ready PDFs under the upload limit.

Where to find the certificate

Old Mutual says: "You can download your tax certificate via our website ... or through the Old Mutual App. You can also send a request via Whatsapp."

  • Website: log in or register at my.oldmutual.co.za.
  • Old Mutual App: search "Old Mutual" in your app store. Old Mutual lists "Access and download all your tax certificates" among the app's features.
  • WhatsApp: save 0860 933 333, send "Hi" and follow the menu prompts.
  • Call centre: Old Mutual's contact page lists 0860 933 333, Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00.

Old Mutual does not publish a step-by-step menu path for the certificate. After you log in, look for your documents or tax certificates for the policy.

Which Old Mutual business holds your RA

Old Mutual runs more than one administration platform. Old Mutual Investment Group, for example, has its own digital solutions page and says clients are notified by SMS, email or in-app notification once tax certificates are available. Check which business and contact number appear on your latest retirement annuity statement, and use that channel.

What the certificate shows

A retirement annuity tax certificate confirms the contributions you made to the fund during the tax year, which for the 2026 filing season is 1 March 2025 to 28 February 2026. Check that the policy number, tax year and contribution total match your own records before you file.

Make it SARS-ready before you upload

When you do upload the certificate, for a correction or a verification, the file has to pass eFiling's upload checks:

  • Under 5MB per file. A multi-page phone photo or a high-resolution scan can go over the limit.
  • Not password-protected. SARS lists password-protected and encrypted documents from banks and funds as a cause of failed uploads. The file opens for you but eFiling rejects it.
  • Readable. Your name, the policy or account number, the tax year and the contribution total must be legible after any compression.
  • A plain filename. Use letters, numbers and hyphens only, for example old-mutual-ra-certificate-2026.pdf.
The fix for a protected or oversized PDF: Open the certificate, print it or display it clearly on screen, and scan it as a new PDF. A fresh scan carries no encryption, and TaxScanZA exports it under 5MB with a clean filename.

If the figure on your return is wrong

SARS's ITR12 guide says auto-assessments use data received from "employers, financial institutions, medical schemes, retirement annuity fund administrators and other third-party data providers". If the contribution figure on your return does not match your certificate, SARS's auto-assessment guidance is to ask the institution that provided the data to correct it and send the updated data to SARS. Then open your return again, check that the figure has updated, and file. Keep the certificate: it is your proof if SARS asks.

Check the file before you upload

Run the certificate through the SARS Document Compliance Checker. It flags encrypted PDFs, oversized files and filenames eFiling may refuse, in your browser, without uploading anything. Then follow the verification guide for the eFiling submission itself.
